A Bay Shore man has been arrested for allegedly using violence and drugs in order to force a victim to engage in commercial sex acts for money.
On March 30, Torrey “Smiley” Brown was staying at the Shore Motor Inn in Patchogue when he allegedly paid for a taxi to transport the victim to his location. Once at the motel, Brown allegedly provided the victim with drugs and told her that she owed him a debt, forcing her to engage in sex with others for money to repay the debt. However, even after the victim provided Brown with the amount that he claimed she owed, Brown allegedly told her that she owed him even more.
For several days, Brown allegedly prevented the victim from leaving the motel room by blocking the door, punching her in the face, providing her with controlled substances which caused her to overdose, and threatening her with a knife.
On April 5, the victim was able to escape from the motel room when Brown fell asleep. The victim asked staff at the motel to call the police, and Brown was arrested at the scene.
On June 26, Brown was arraigned on the following charges contained within the indictment before Acting Supreme Court Justice Steven A. Pilewski:
- one count of Sex Trafficking (Force), a Class B violent felony
- four counts of Sex Trafficking, Class B felonies
- one count of Attempted Promoting Prostitution in the Third Degree, a Class E felony
“This defendant allegedly used violence, drugs, and threats to control a woman and force her to do sexual acts against her will,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney. “Sex trafficking has no place in Suffolk County, and we will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to bring traffickers to justice.”
Pilewski ordered Brown held on $500,000 cash, $1,000,000 bond, or $5,000,000 partially secured bond during the pendency of the case. Brown is due back in court on July 31 and faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted on the top count.
