Baldwin Man Arrested for Allegedly Setting Cars on Fire

A Baldwin man was arrested for allegedly setting multiple vehicles on fire.

On May 10 at 1:30 a.m., Nassau County police officers responded to a call for multiple vehicles on fire at Municipal Parking Field 1, located in the vicinity of 32 Smith Street in Freeport. Upon arrival, officers found several vehicles engulfed in flames.

The investigation by detectives determined that Elder Lopez Avalos, 27, was allegedly responsible for starting the fire and was observed by officers a short distance away from the scene. He was placed into custody without further incident.

Further investigation by detectives also determined that the defendant was also allegedly responsible for also setting fires to vehicles on May 2, 2026; June 18, 2025; and June 29, 2025, in Freeport.

Police charged Lopez Avalos with six counts of Arson in the Third Degree and Arson in the Fourth Degree. He was scheduled to be arraigned on May 11 at First District Court in Hempstead.
