Suffolk Police to Step up Enforcement for Labor Day Weekend

Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine and Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina are announcing increased patrols on roadways and waterways for the upcoming Labor Day weekend.

Police will be conducting high-visibility patrols throughout the county between September 4 and  September 7, including Highway Patrol Bureau Selective Alcohol Fatality Enforcement Team (SAFE-T)  officers. Personnel will take a zero-tolerance approach to anyone driving or boating under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In addition to targeting those under the influence, officers will enforce aggressive driving and seatbelt infractions.

The department will utilize funds from the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee Safe Driving Enforcement grant and the Suffolk County Stop-DWI grant to provide traffic and DWI enforcement.

During Labor Day weekend 2025, twenty-four people were arrested for Driving While Intoxicated.

“Labor Day Weekend highlights the end of the summer season for many families, and we do not want a joyous weekend to turn into a tragic one,” Romaine said. “If you choose to act irresponsibly, law enforcement will be out in full force and hold you accountable. There is zero tolerance for reckless behavior on our roads. Please use common sense and plan for a way to get home responsibly.”

“The Suffolk County Police Department will have a heightened presence on our roadways and waterways throughout the holiday weekend, and we encourage everyone to act responsibly,” Catalina said. “In this day and age where a ride is always available at your fingertips, there is no excuse for driving while intoxicated. Do not put your life or anyone else’s life in jeopardy.”

In addition to traffic and boating enforcement, officers will patrol popular downtown business districts,  large public gatherings, and vulnerable entities.

Residents are reminded to call 911 for emergencies or 631-852-COPS for non-emergencies.
