Shirley Man Arrested for DWAI in Bayport Crash

Was Also Driving in Excess of 100 mph

A Shirley man was arrested for DWAI after he allegedly caused a crash in Bellport two months ago that injured two people, one seriously.

On April 28 at approximately 1:10 p.m., a 2022 BMW being driven by Mario Auer was traveling eastbound on Sunrise Highway, just west of  Nicolls Road, when he lost control of the vehicle, struck the center median and overturned. Both Auer, and his passenger, Caitlyn Rose Lovelock, were ejected from the vehicle.

Lovelock, 28, of Mastic Beach, was transported to NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk in Patchogue, with  minor injuries. Auer, 25, of Shirley, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check.

On June 29, Auer was arrested at the Fifth Precinct and charged with Driving While Ability Impaired  by Drugs, Reckless Endangerment in the Second Degree, Reckless Driving, and Speeding. An investigation  determined Auer was driving more than 100 miles per hour immediately preceding the crash.

Auer is scheduled to be arraigned on June 29 at First District Court.
