Suffolk County police arrested a man for allegedly fleeing police on a motorized scooter before crashing and seriously injuring himself in Copiague.
On July 10, Suffolk County Police First Precinct officers initiated a traffic stop on a 19-year-old man who was riding a 2025 Racestar scooter southbound on Great Neck Road at approximately 12:05 p.m. The man, Albert Jose Rosario Duran, allegedly refused to pull over and attempted to evade police.
Rosario Duran allegedly collided with a 2012 Ford Escape, driven by Sandra De Leon at 12:13 p.m. on southbound Great Neck Road, just south of Rose Street. Rosario Duran then allegedly struck a telephone pole on the westbound side of Great Neck Road. He was transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
De Leon, 50, from Copiague, was not injured.
First Precinct Patrol officers charged Rosario Duran, of Copiague, with Unlawful Fleeing of a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle in the Third Degree. He was also issued several traffic summonses for various offenses, including Reckless Driving, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 3rd Degree, and various traffic infractions.
The scooter and Ford were impounded for a safety check.
He was issued a Field Appearance Ticket and will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip at a later date.
