Medford Woman Arrested for Leandra’s Law after Allegedly Crashing Vehicle

Suffolk County Police last night arrested a woman for allegdly driving while intoxicated with her one-year-old and four-year-old sons in the vehicle in Brookhaven. 

On July 18, Jesher Rivera-Barreto was driving a 2006 Toyota Forerunner southbound on Horseblock Road at the intersection of Montauk Highway when she allegedly lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway, and crashed into the woods at approximately 11:25 p.m.  

Rivera-Barreto and the two children were transported to NYU Langone Hospital – Suffolk in Patchogue for evaluation. Rivera-Barreto and the one-year-old were treated for minor injuries. The four-year-old was not injured. Both children were released to their father at the hospital.  

Rivera-Barreto, 31, was charged with Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a Child Passenger Less than 15 Years Old (Leandra’s Law), Driving While Intoxicated,  and two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. She is being held overnight at the Fourth  Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on July 19.
