An Amityville man has been charged with manslaughter, assault, and other charges for a high-speed drug- and alcohol-infused crash that killed a 23-year-old woman in April.
On the morning of April 5, 2026, Justin Osorio was driving a 2008 Ford Escape eastbound on the Southern State Parkway near exit 19N in Hempstead. His 20-year-old cousin was sitting in the rear middle seat, and 23-year-old Cindy Granados-Vigil was sitting in the front passenger seat. Osorio and Granados-Vigil were living together in Amityville at the time with their nine-month-old child.
According to the investigation, Osorio was allegedly driving 80 miles per hour in the left-hand lane of the Southern State Parkway, which is designated as having a 55-mile-per-hour speed limit.
At approximately 5:34 a.m., the defendant allegedly drove straight through a curve in the roadway, crossed both lanes of traffic, and crashed into a tree in a wooded area off the right shoulder of the parkway.
Granados-Vigil was killed instantly from blunt force trauma. The other passenger suffered neck and back injuries.
The defendant sustained a spinal cord injury and was taken into surgery at Nassau University Medical Center.
The investigation revealed that Osorio was allegedly operating his vehicle under the influence of marijuana and alcohol and was an unlicensed driver.
Blood drawn from Osorio at the hospital on the morning of the crash also revealed a high level of Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol, an active and impairing component of cannabis.
The defendant was arrested by the New York State Police on April 5.
Osorio, 24, was arraigned on July 2 before Judge Joseph Girardi on grand jury indictment charges of Manslaughter in the Second Degree (a Class C felony); Assault in the Second Degree and Vehicular Manslaughter in the Second Degree (both Class D felonies); Assault in the Third Degree (a Class A misdemeanor); Operating a Motor Vehicle While Under the Influence of Drugs, Driving While Ability Impaired by the Combined Influence of Drugs or of Alcohol and any Drug or Drugs and Reckless Driving (all unclassified misdemeanors).
“This defendant showed a total disregard for anyone’s safety and abandoned common sense the moment he got behind the wheel after allegedly spending an evening drinking and getting high,” said Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly. “The child will now grow up without a mother, and the defendant stands to spend his child’s formative years behind bars if convicted.”
Osorio pleaded not guilty and was remanded. His next court date is scheduled for July 17. If convicted, he faces up to seven to 15 years in prison.
